Unique Internet ID for all Americans

Hey, you like being anonymous online? Not anymore. President Obama has given the Commerce Department the authority to implement a 'national cyber security measure' that involves giving every single  American a unique online identity.

The wonderful U.S. Commerce Secratary Gary Locke mentioned that 'the new system would not be akin to a national ID card, or a government controlled system, but that it would enhance security and reduce the need for people to memorize dozens of passwords online'

This basically means the second you log online, they know what you, John Smith, are doing at all times. What websites you visit, what content you're posting/reading... everything. It has been dubbed a measure for the citizen's security, but in reality it just gives the government absolute control to look over your shoulder whenever they damn well please. (Not that they couldn't do that already, but this is mainstream and easy... right out in the open)

I wasn't sure if I had made the right decision moving from the US back to Canada, but after this (and unless I'm just largely mistaken about this whole thing) I am very glad I did.

What do you guys think?

Seriously, why do they need to know this stuff? How is this not a major violation of privacy rights? Maybe the crazy gunman guy was on the right track.

Well, I am so glad I don't live in the U.S.A.!!! I would love to live there, but after I read this... I'm not so keen on that anymore.
This sounds horrible. I mean, the point of the internet was to be "alternative". What the f**k?! Please, pardon my language but I am really shocked. This is so "totalitarian", like in every cyberpunk movie.
And by the way, I like your blog. I'm definitely following. :D

that's insane! Seems like it violates the constitutions 4th amendment which protects us from unreasonable search and seizure. How is logging all of our online movement and activity not an unreasonable search?

The fundamentalists will go nuts(er). A national id or "mark of the beast" is supposed to be a sign of the "tribulation" or something.

Privacy is an interesting thing. They keep trying to get rid of it, don't they?
I suppose they'll use the argument that "if you're not doing anything illegal, then you have nothing to worry about." It's the same as having a police officer looking over your shoulder as you go about your day.

Hooray for Canada!
Also, I wonder if proxies could avoid this?

yeah canada's awesome for anonymity. i got an email from my ISP yesterday containing an email from warner brothers' copyright dept because i downloaded "Inception" illegally. i called the ISP, and the guy was like "don't worry about it man, they can't do anything to you. i've got a couple terabytes worth of illegally downloaded content myself, they can't do anything to you"
